Welcome to
A Day In the Life of a PWD (Person With a Disability) Comics
When I became disabled at the age of 38, I also became acutely aware of how differently I was being treated as a disabled power wheelchair user compared to how I was treated as a non-disabled person. The ableist situations I encountered were often surprising, shocking, offensive, frightening, and even humorous. I imagined that these encounters would make great comic strips, and I was eager to use creativity to poke fun at ableism and perhaps spread some awareness.
However, although I have skill in other artistic areas as well as an abundance of creative ideas, I possess virtually no talent for drawing. So, I found a comic making app with a selection of pre-drawn characters and items that I can choose from. With this and clip art from the internet, I began making comic strips based on my lived experience as a person with a disability and power wheelchair user.
As I shared these comics on Facebook, people from the disability community began posting comments sharing their own stories and experiences, and I made those into comic strips, too. People reached out to me to ask if I could create a strip about something important to them or about something they feel ought to be addressed, and I made those into comic strips, too. As a result, I have created hundreds of comics, and every one of them are inspired by someone's lived experience. (So, if you see a comic and ask yourself Does this really happen?!, I assure you, it happened to at least one person, and probably more.)
Through this process, and the many converstions I've had with other disabled folks, I have learned so much about disabilities other than my own, and the various 'giggles and gripes' of living with these disabilities.
Please feel free to share these comics or use them in your projects to help spread awareness and advocate for accessibility and inclusion.
